Default copied designs - flattery or frustrating?

If you see one of your designs copied do you find this flattering that your work is good enough for someone to try and duplicate or do you think it is rude and frustrating to have your designs copied?

I'm not talking about for eg a flower design but say a headband design where someone has copied the placement of flowers etc as well.

also would it make any difference to you if the colour scheme was different or the same?

thanks for taking the time to answer

That's a tough one...I used to always think copying something thst someone else has created was the most ultimate form of flattrey...now it just depends on what part they are copying if it's one or two minor thimgs then ok but if they are duplicating absolutly everything right down to the placemnt of flowers, then I wouldn't be so quick to blow it off...that just proves to me 2 things...1-they have no creativity of their own to come up with something creative on their own and 2- its screams laziness to me....What's your take??

I've had this happen a few times, and I hate it. I'm sure plenty are going to say I should be flattered. Well, I'm not. Even with different colors, I don't like it. There is one shop I can think of, where they have the same random things I carry (too many similar items/designs to be considered coincidental). Even though some items may have slightly different colors, or whatever, it's really annoying. Especially when you're undercutting me on every one of those things. Quit it. /rant

Hmmm that's a hard question to answer. Mainly because the longer I'm in this business, the more I see that it's all about copying. We basically all sell the same stuff. And no matter how hard someone will try and copy you, it will never be the same. I think it's flattering and frustrating at the same time. Now if the same person were to keep copying ALL of your designs, that would just be a creepy stalker-ish thing to do!! And THAT would definitely frustrate me!

See my creepy stalker-ish note!

Oh, and about the undercutting... if you're both selling in the same market, VERY FRUSTRATING!!!

Thank you everyone, some interesting points here to mull over so far. the reason I ask is because a week or so ago I found a beautiful clip on here posted by another member, it was stunning and I have recreated it using my own colour scheme for my own personal use tonight as a fasinator headband to match my outfit for a friends hens night. please dont shoot me down in flames as I honestly would never copy someone normally I always do my own thing and put my own twists on common designs but this one was so stunningly beautiful as it was I couldnt bare to change it aside from the colours. I have shown a few friends what i made and they think I should add it to my store but as it is not my original design I am very iffy to do that because it isnt mine. it brought up the question of how others would think so thought id ask

sorry for the essay explanation lol and I hope you understand where im coming from and that I am not a copycat designer

Its both frustrating and flattering. Obviously if they are trying to make the exact same thing and copying your entire shop that isnt right. Somethings are hard to do completely different and a lot of people get inspiration from other shops.
