For some one who has no sewing experience then you should look into the brother se-400. Its a simple sewing/embroidery combo for around 400. It is limited to only 4x4 deisgns but its a great starter machine.

Its not the machine that is going to be expensive, its all the added accessories. Every embroidery person will tell you that its very expensive to do embroidery. Between stabilizers, thread, designs, and blanks it is a very expensive hobby. When you do your budget for a machine make sure to budget around 50.00 for thread, stabilizer and some designs to get you started

I've been looking into getting one also so thank you for posting this! I really just do bows right now but may venture out later on. I thought how awesome it would be awesome to be able to monogram some of my bows! I am absolutely clueless as to the "size" and all. I just want to be practical when picking it out, in case I do venture out into other items.

How does anyone figure how much to charge for embroidery? I know someone that charges per thousand stitches. I am just starting out and I don't want to cheat myself.

I have been thinking a lot about getting an embroidery machine, and I know I need to really do my homework. But with the holidays I really haven't had the time. You post was one of the things that I have been wondering about..just how expensive are the materials, and how long will it take to make back the investment in the machine and materials to start.
I also don't know what the market would be like in my area. It's really hard to tell in this economy what would sell...

Agreed...the machine is the cheap part of embroidery. I bought my machine in August..I spent $1500 on my machine and at least another $1000 to get up and running. T-shirts are expensive to stock. I just invested $300 in blanks..and will be ordering more very soon. You will need specialty scissors, thread, stabilizer, spay adhesive, TONS of needles. It adds up quickly!!!!

Please think about the investment you are going to make. It is a larger one.

You will quickly outgrow a 4x4 hoop if you are serious about getting into it. I was tempted to start with that size because of the cost. I decided to go with the PE770 and it lasted almost a year before I upgraded to the PR650 so I'm glad I skipped the 4x4 only machine. They are right though when they say the machine is the cheap part - all the other stuff that you need really adds up.

This is an old thread but I'm laughing because my grandparents owned an embroidery factory and I remember having to reload the shuttles as a kid because our fingers were smaller.

I have an older Brother that I got from Wal-mart. It did not take long before I wished I had bought a bigger and better one.....I can only use a 4X4 hoop and I had to buy a PED-Basic program to transfer all the cute patterns that are sold on the internet or on a disk.
I have found this all to be such a pain and I hardly useg my machine at all (I purchased a Husqvarna that I absolutely love and use all the time) as far as my Brother machine, it will make a good beginner machine for my girls.
