The thing with a camera is when it comes to Pixels anything higher then about a 10 really isn't going to do much for you unless you plan on Blowing your pics up or having life sized photos. The canon rebel xs it's self is a very good camera it's 10.1 MP and is a great first camera for the DLSR camera. It's very affordable and the Lens it comes with by no means is a cheap lens. You can get it for about 499.00 some times less. The rebel xsi is also nice and is 12.2 mp and that is really the only difference between the 2 except that you will pay 150.00 more for it. Also the Camera people will tell you that you can't take pic with the screen on the canon rebel xs in live mode which is not true .. The t1i, t2i, and t3i, go higher in price and pixels but they also have the ability to record video in HD. You can buy a Package deal at Bestbuy with the t1i and it will come with the 18-55 IS lens and the 55-250 IS lens and it's about 899.00 just the body on this camera is about 650.00 the lens to buy separately are about 199.00 and 299.00 each so IMO it's actually better to buy them together. Unless your someone who is really into Photography and your buying a full frame camera and looking for some really powerful lenses. If you really just want a camera to take nice pic of then I wouldn't (especially for your first) go with anything higher then maybe the t3i. With that camera you are looking at about 899.00. Anything higher then that is for people who are more experienced.. Now if you are Experienced then Yes the 7 is a great camera All the canons take BEAUTIFUL pics have good battery life. The one thing I will tell you is that if you buy this camera you need to make sure that the first thing you do with all your lenses is buy filters for them. This will protect them from dust and scratches. Hope this Helps.

I agree. If your just going to use it in Auto mode then there is no reason to spend the extra money on the 7. Also the kit lens will be just fine.

I have a Canon XSi, paid about $525 and I love it! It's a little step above the normal point and shoot and works for me. I'm no pro, all I wanted was to take nice and clear pics of the kids.

I've had the Canon Rebel xt since 2006, and I love it! It came with the basic 18-55 lens, and works great! I've had my eye on some more expensive lenses, and hope to someday buy them. My sister in-law just bought the 7 last week. She hasn't learned to use it yet, but I'd love to trade...

I am in the market for a dslr camera, too and all of the reviews that I have read on this one have been great. Actually earlier this morning, I almost bought it from walmart.com, but decided to wait. Now I see that they don't even make this camera anymore (it's been discontinued). Does anyone know which camera took its place? Help! It seems I'm always a day late and a dollar short! LOL

I just went to walmart .com and you can order the canon rebel xs at least my walmart.com you can? The only real difference in the xs and the xsi is the pixel count. from 10.1 to 12.2 there is really NOTHING different with these 2 cameras. The camera sales people will tell you that you cant use the LCD screen to take pics with the XS but I will tell you as someone who owns it this is not true you can take pics with it. Canon fazes there cameras out all the time. Check Ebay even and craigslist. I know that samsclub sells the xs and the extra lens, bag, and sd card for 699.00 which is a really good deal and sometimes you can find this same deal for the T1i with lens and bag and card for about 899.00 . If your not doing anything but taking family pics and pics of your products you sell you really don't need the higher more expensive cameras unless you just like paying lots of money. And unless you really know Photography a full frame camera may be way more then you can handle.

Thanks! Think that I'm going to go ahead and order the one from Walmart.com. It's only $499 and comes with a bag!

I don't know what anyone else has said but here is my opinion because
I have had the Rebel xt, the Canon 30D, the Canon 40D and the Canon 50D and then the Rebel T2i and now the Rebel T1i.
When I was shooting professionally I like the 50D the best BUT that is because of pride and I felt that you don't shoot with a little camera professionally LOL
But when I stopped shooting professionally I sold it and bought the T2i which was the Rebel version of the 7D, It is a great great camera for half the price. But now I know the difference I have some shoots this summer with grads and I am going to be shooting with my Canon T1i and i know it will do what I want it to. So I hope this helped you, all I can say is don't get sucked up in the world of trying to keep up with others and spending alot of undue money, you can see my shooting style and with all my cameras I have done these.
www.kellyephotography.com
all you can see is the splash page now LOL, well you can go to my blog but I don't think I have much on it.

Thanks so much for the info. From what I have read the Ti1 took the place of the XS and about the only difference is the megapixel size. I think it runs 200-300 more than the XS, so is it worth that much more money? I just want to take good pictures of my grandbabies and my products! LOL
Your pictures are gorgeous by the way!

Thanks tooltymfan and Veree!! I think for things like that I think you would be very pleased with the xs. I have a friend who's daughter just bought it and she loves it. Canon's are very user friendly and the Rebel series are great camera's.
