Default Cleaning Woodburning Tool

I just started bow making and using a woodburning tool. How do you clean it? After touching the ribbon to the tool there is residue left behind on the tool. Do I clean it? Or is it just that it's new and pretty that I feel like I should clean it? Thanks!!

Leave it on for a little bit and the residue will burn right off.

When I'm using my woodburner a lot, I keep a wet washcloth nearby to and wipe it down after I use.

Nail file or piece of sandpaper and quickly rub across the tip whenever there is residue. I have a sanding block I use and just swipe against it once on each side and it's clean. You can do it while it's hot or cold, just be careful when it's hot (pst, that's why I use a sanding block).

I have a holder with a tile on it, I run it over the tile a few times, all gunk gone...

I use a scrunched up piece of aluminum foil. It works especially well if you've got a lot of burnt stuff on it.

Thank you!!! One more question- are you all using the tips and cutting with the tool or just putting the ribbon up against the hot cylinder? So far I've just put the ribbon up to the cylinder. I need to find something to cut the ribbon on with the tool before I try that.

I use both. If I'm cutting ribbon I use the slanted tip, if I'm just heat sealing normally I use a lighter but if the woodburner is on, I'll touch it to the barrel.

Get yourself a glass cutting board to cut your ribbon. I bought one at Walmart, pretty big and I use it to cut my ribbon plus I also taped a paper ruler to the bottom of it so I never have to measure prior to cutting, it's on the board. HTH!
