Default Scared of Wood burning tool

Don't laugh at me but I am afraid of the thing. I bought one from Michael's last year with a coupon and I have yet to break it in. What's the best way to use it as far as a safe surface? My poor glue gun was always falling on the floor. The little stand it props on is broken. I finally sat it in a alluminum pan on top of some of that no slip stuff. I was thinking of using an old cookie sheet with the woodburner. I just don't want to end up with 3rd degree burns! LOL!

I use a cookie sheet, I lay them both in it. Just try to not let cords tangle, I have tested and the cookie sheet does not get hot as long as the end of the burner doesn't touch it, I dont' use the stand I just lay it in there.

Umm, no it's not silly. I am afraid of mine. I used it the other day to try to cut korkers and burned my finger. Oww. Talk about an instant blister. It was a deep one as well and it just annoyed the crap out of me, as it was on the palm side of my index finger. Hmm, come to think of it, guess I was lucky as the skin there is thinker and tougher. Anyway. I also dislike the stand. Here is what I have heard. I made the glass cutting mat that Tonya describes on her website. A Flight of Fancy: Hairbows, Free Tips
I think I read that she hot glued her woodburner stand and glue gun stand to the mat and that it really helped her. I haven't done that...yet.

Also I have heard that some people put their woodburner in an old skillet when they are using it. Not sure what type they use...cast iron sounds like it might work. Oh and I used an old fork to hold my korkers down to cut them last night. It took a bit more time, but I didn't burn myself!!

I have burned myself 1 time, it wasn't that bad. I have an old small plate that I don't use anymore, and the metal stand that came with the burner I used my glue gun to go the stand to the plate, and I love it, it doesnt slide away from me and it is easily accessible and stoes perfect.

Yep, that's what I do! Those flimsy little stands just don't do their job, and I usually have 3 different things going on at once, so I don't have room for a big cookie sheet or skillet. So, I glued them down (did the stand for my hotfix tool too) and I get a small work area + sturdy stands. Also, since the tools each have their own spot, my cords don't ever get tangled.

Here's a pic:

Just make sure you don't ever get it too close to your skin and there won't be any reason to be scared of it. Remember, you're much bigger than it is and you could totally kick it's ... well, you catch my drift ... if it came down to it. If it helps, you're more than welcome to do a bit of trash talking to put it in its place before you even begin.

I am scared of mine too... I figured that if it even touched my skin it would burn right through it.... I was making a dress for my dd one time and it started to fall off because I was doing three projects at once. I tried to catch it and it went right through my dress and burnt a hole in it....

I'm scared of mines too. I've burnt my finger a couple of times trying to cut korker ribbon. I hate that stand.
