Do you punch the hole before or after you put the resin on?

ok I know this is a dumb question, but can you use the resin if you are putting the image on the top of the bottlecap, I got a necklace from Christi and the image was on top, it seems like the resin would run down the sides

I feel stupid asking this - but why do you need to punch holes in bottlecaps?
