For a while I was using fabric outside for the lighting. Then I used a plate that worked but now I found I like the Hens and Chicks we have planted for a backdrop.

I love all things old and re-done. I have some trays and frames that I love to use. Textured wallpaper inside of trays or frames is one of my favorite tricks! Natural light (just not direct light) also makes a huge difference! You can see a few of the backgrounds I like in my Etsy shop: http://www.fancyschmancybyjeni.etsy.com

If it's something small, scrapbook paper is awesome and cheap! Here are a few of mine with scrapbook paper, natural lighting, and the camer on "auto no-shake" for a steady pic.

The other suggestions are great too!

That's scrapbook paper? Wow, you'd never know! Can I ask where you got it? I was looking through some scrapbook paper for exactly this reason today but couldn't find any that was suitable.

I took my most recent set of pics on my deck in indirect natural light with a mini straw bale and mini pumpkins, with that fake spiderweb stuff. You can see them in the hairbow gallery under "Halloween Share". I'm hoping to get a mini Christmas tree to use as a prop for Christmas items. I think things like that really add to the photo, and are more fun than a plain background.
