Default I hope I don't....

Sound really silly right now, but I have a (probably) silly question.

I notice pictures where an item stands out and the background is blurred, like this(see below link)

http://www.etsy.com/listing/60970125...facet=handmade

My question is, does this require some certain skill with photo shop or is it a function on a camera?

I am a total photography newb. I know nothing about it. lol As you can tell. So please excuse me if it's a silly question.

While I could not tell you what setting it is, it is a setting on the camera

Thanks! Now I just need to figure it out on my camera. I have so many settings that I haven't played around with yet and no nothing about.

You can do this via Photoshop too. I have PaintShop Pro and it's a blur feature. Using your camera, I believe you can do this by lowering the aperature setting.

I don't think it is a camera setting. At least I have never seen it like that. I do it in photoshop. Picnic has it as well but it is not as good.

I don't have a camera that does this(I'm sure the high end cameras do this to some extent) but I use the mask tool and gaussian blur in GIMP to do this.

Hubby bought a nice camera last summer, very expensive, a big one you have to change out the lenses and stuff, I know NOTHING about photography LOL

But I do know it has a setting where you can do this because he took some pictures that had the background blurred while the kids were cute as can be

It can be done on both. I have a good camera, but not high end by any means. I can do this easywhen I am far away from the subject and zoom in. Im still new to photog as well, but it seems to work well and i get the same effect as your example.

Thanks for the help ladies! I think it's time I invested in PS. I tried GIMP though and I was completely lost and just never could get the hang of it. I am afraid to spend the money for PS and have the same thing happen.

exactly this! I don't know what it's called either but I know there is a way to do it with the lens on a NICE (like $500+) camera!
