any recommendations for a good digi camera?

looking for one for my summer birthday lol....I have zero photography skills, so need a point and shoot, that will take great close ups...
any advice? anything you love or hate about your camera? what do you feel are must haves? would love something that has point and shoot with a few slr qualities, dh likes to play and adjust.....thanks for any input.

I have a Canon Powershot. I got it for Christmas a couple of years ago & love it. I am now ready to upgrade because I want to try a camera with more features. Very easy to use though & great quality pictures. I also got a Canon photo printer as a gift & the pictures come out looking very professional. I am will definately be a Canon girl from now on.

P.S. Make sure you get a camera with a rechargeable battery, they come with the camera.

I have a Kodak EasyShare Z710 and I LOVE it! I have had it for 2 years now and I have taken it everywhere.

I also have a kodak easyshare it is the p712. i have been happy and also love the video recorder on it. I can still zoom in/out after the recording has started.

Are you looking to stay within a certain budget? I had 2 Sony's previously that took pretty nice photos for a point and shoot but BOTH died just around a year and Sony's only offer was to send them in for a flat fee repair service (no matter what the issue is) that at the time would have cost me the same as just buying another one of the same cameras online though like ritzcamera or something. Becaues they both had a lens problem (the lens stopped going in and out - neither had ever been dropped, kept in a case, etc.) I don't buy Sony anymore.

I have a Nikon Digital SLR D40 now, that takes INCREDIBLE photos and has automatic settings that can make it as easy as a point and shoot, but it's NOT cheap.

I would have to agree with the nikon brand, But make sure that it is a slr camera
