Default Photoshop brushes

Ok we recently purchased photoshop CS5. I am clueless about it. What are brushes and what can I do with them?

Any other helpful photoshop tips are also greatly appreciated

I don't use brushes very often, but you open the brush file the same way you would open a .psd or .atn - just double click it. Then, when you go to Photoshop, select the brush tool, scroll to the bottom of your brush options and the new brushes should be there. Use them as a stamp. Press F5 or window > brush to get options to rotate the brush or flip it around. GL!
