Default Product Photo Question

What is the easiest program to use to give photos the crisp white background? I was really hoping there was a good one that is free, like picasa or something. I'm totally a beginner when it comes to editing photos but just wanted to give it a try. If someone knows of a good tutorial that would be awesome. TIA!!!

A light box helps a ton! And it was super easy to make. I spent probably $15 in all to make it, including the light and the daylight bulbs. If you then take that picture and open pretty much any photo editing program you can play with the exposure and get a crisp background. I like Adobe Photoshop elements (it's about $80 bucks, unless you go directly through adobe its $100) and picnik.com is pretty good to, just doesn't allow you to do as much.

Yeah i've been taking them on white foam board. I have a friend that has been editing them for me but she's in the process of moving and i wanted to do some that i've already taken the photo of. I just wasnt sure if you got the white background by actually cropping the background out or if you did it just like you said playing with the exposure in the photo program. See i told ya i didnt know much about it.
