Photoshop Elements is not the cheapest on the block, but it is a great one and about 1/10th the price of the full Photoshop. You can get it for around $70, and I have found it to be worth every penny. It can do both tasks that you mentioned.

Try Picnik.com! I love it. It does everything I use Photoshop for, without as many steps. It is free, but some features are premium. I use the premium and it was $24 for a year.

My sister-in-law uses PictureIt. She swears by it and she is a photolic.

My husband had Photoshop Elements put on the new laptop he bought me last Fall. It is not the most intuitive program and the user manual sucks, but now that I understand how it works, I love it! I'm now addicted to digital scrapbooking, fixing all my photography mistakes and otherwise maniuplating my photos!

If you buy it, I recommend buying a separate book on how to use it. Adobe does not really provide a lot of information.

I have been using the photoshop elements 7 trial version and now I am on the photoshop cs4 trial version (heehee using the free trial's to see which ones I like best before buying...might as well...they are free ) I love using both of them for what you are needing them for. I use them mainly for getting rid of backgrounds from my pics & then adding the watermark. I havn't tried the others mentioned but I will def be checking them out. I just hate to spend the money until I know which one is the best for me.

Try GIMP. It's free and as good as photoshop.

GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program

++++++++++++++++++++++

Google ranking of gimp.org is 8/10. Ranking of adobe.com is 7/10.

Also, check your local library for GIMP books. I just found 2 at my library.

Books on Adobe products can be super expensive. I recommend the Dummy series for Photoshop if you're going to use that product. For me, photoshop is difficult because of the need to click on multiple menus to get the job done. It aggravates my CTS, so I have to use macros if I want to use it.
