Default What lens for Canon?

I am looking at buying a Canon Rebel T2i and need suggestions for a lens. I will need a lens for close up of the products, but also for full shot kids pictures. I still plan on using a photographer for most of my photo shoots, but want to be able to take better pictures of things that I have made.

I was looking at getting the EOS Rebel T2i EF-S 18-55mm IS Lens Kit. I am thinking about doing refurbished to try to save some money. Is this lens worth it or do I save money and buy a better lens.

I have that lens. I really like it. Some people might say it's not that great but I can get some really good close ups with it and some good pics of my kids. I actually think
that it is probably the best lens to have when you are just getting started with a DSLR camera. I also have a 75-300 mm canon lens that I use a lot, but that because I like to get shots of my kids when they don't know I'm watching. If you get a zoom lens too make sure is is an IS one.
Here are a few that I have taken with it.

This one was cropped quite a bit and still looks good.

Also the link in my siggy is to my face book page and the pics from about the last month are useing it.

Beautiful pictures! The flowers on your facebook page are wonderful! I think I am going to just get the lens that comes with it for a run of the mill one, I just am not sure what else to get. Thanks for the advice!

Hiya,

I never used the 18-55 that came with my camera (XTi - 400D)

I bought the 24-105 lens, including the IS feature, and it's a pretty good all-around lens. Cost maybe around $1000 new.

If you eventually invest in a more expensive lens, I'd strongly suggest buying some sort of filter, as well. I chose the UV filter. For $20-50, it's a worthwhile investment, to protect your lens. Even if you don't feel comfortable to use it as protection, consider it a dust-guard. It screws on to the lens, so it minimizes the dust getting into the lens area.

Once, I accidentally dropped my camera, lens down, while the lens cap was still on it. Well, the UV filter completely broke, but there was not a single dent/scratch on my lens! The camera was in a semi-cushioned bag when I dropped it, but whew!

And yes, it still works very good!

I think I have changed my mind. I found a Canon 60D with a 18-200mm IS
lens. I think I am going to go this route instead. I am really excited about the camera!

I like the canon 50mm f/1.8 to get up close shot and it's gives you the nice blur look in the background. It doesn
t have a zoom so you have to be close to your item. I also use my canon XTi kit lens for randon pics of my kids

Where did you find that camera? I've been trying to buy that same thing for a month now and B&H Photo say they are on backorder! I have a Canon 30d and just want to upgrade. I love mine!

I bought that lens and loved it too! Works great for a fast moving kid, especially when you can't "pick" your backgrounds, and have to take your pics where you can get em
