Default Nikon 18-55mm vs 35mm Lens - NEED HELP

I have a Nikon D3000 DSLR camera. I'm not a professional. I just like taking pictures, mostly of my children & products that I sell. I only have the standard kit lens. I am looking at buying a nikkor 35mm f/1.8g lens but I don't know much about it. I've been doing some research & it looks like the 35mm is a better lens, I'm guessing since it's a prime lens. My question, is there enough of a difference that I need both that lens & a standard lens? I am hoping to take some better indoor pictures for when I can;t get outside to take them. Thanks for any help!

I don't have a nikon, I have a canon but I recently bought the 50mm 1.8 and I love it! The difference in clarity between the kit lens and this lens is HUGE. You will need to know the workings of your camera to obviously get the most out of it. The difference in indoor shots is amazing. I still use my 18-55mm kit lens too since it is a 50mm, I probably would have rather had a 35mm but I was impatient and didn't want to wait! HA!

Prime lenses are always sharper than any other lenses. And I would love to own 35mm. Keep in mind you can't zoom in and out and becausee it's 35mm you have to be pretty close to the object so it would be great lens for product. I don't own Nikon, I have Canon and I love my Tamron 28-70mm, maybe look into those?

I have a Nikon (different model) & I use the 35mm 1.8 - it is phenomenal & well worth the upgrade! Since I purchased it, over a year ago, I have not switched back to the kit lens once.

Thanks for all of the input! I ended up getting it after reading all the good things about it. Now, I need advice on an external flash. Can anyone recommend a good, inexpensive one?

I bought an external flash, but never ever use it. Natural light is best.
