Kats ribbon tie halter dresses or tops!
Supplies needed:
elastic (I used 3/8" wide elastic)
thread
needle
sewing machine
1/2 yard fabric
scissors
pinking shears (optional)
large coordinating button
1 yard ribbon for "ties"
Lay out your fabric.
THis tutorial measurements make a halter TOP to fit a 12-18 month sized baby.
Make sure the FOLD is on your LEFT side where my measuring tape is! You are cutting BOTH pieces on the fold !!
Measure out 13 " in length and cut.

Then measure the width of the top you want it to be.I just estimated on this one as its going to be gathered anyways. So I measured 10"

then cut. then you have your front piece.
instead of measuring the second piece I just layed the first piece on the fabric and used it as a pattern of sorts.
Again please make sure your fold piece is on another fold

as you can see my second piece is NOT on a fold >< doh! But I will sew them together so its going to be okay LOL so you go ahead and cut on the fold

SO here are my "two pieces" front and back!

I then head to my sewing machine and get ready to stitch it up!
I first measure out my elastic needed.jorja is about 15" around underneath her arms around the chest area so I measure that out on my piece of elastic and cut it and put it aside to use for later.\

then I make my edges all pretty with the pinking shears.
This is TOTALLY optional!! I ve been sewing for about 12 years so yeah its pretty much a reflex to just do it LOL

see pretty edges. I cut the TOP and the BOTTOM like this

Turn your fabrics RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER ~
Like so ~

then proceed to stitch up the SIDES! (these are the 13" sides)

see pinking shear crazy again

I clipped the edges after seaming up the side

make sure you sew both sides up
as in the left and right sides!
then whip out your pins! so you can make your "casing" for the elastic around the top.

Fold a piece of your fabric down around the top.I kind of eyeball it depending on how wide my elastic is. Since iM using a 3/8" size elastic I go a bit under a inch wide and pin all the way around.

sew up your casing .stitch at the edge (the edge I have pinked there)
Make sure you leave a hole!! a small one to thread your elastic through.

Whip out your precut piece of elastic and a safety pin.
(old fashioned puller through-er

)

attach the safety pin to the end of the elastic

push the saftey pin into the hole youve made and start thread it through the casing all the way back around.

Pull it through ~ so you have both ends of the elastic and a gathered edge of fabric

pinch your ends of elastic together

Sew a little X onto them or a box /square to hold them together and make sure they stay that way

tie off

Pull the elastic through all the way and just gather the fabric around the edges there

stitch up your small hole you used to pull the elastic through the casing

see no hole

turn it upside down and roll the hemline twice to avoid fraying fabric during the washing process.I made small rolls

stitch up your hemline all the way around

turn right side out and you have a skirt ish looking thing
almost done!

pull out your thread and needle
thread your needle.
place your large button in the middle center of the top near the bottom of the elastic and sew a little into place. about 4 times through sew.

take your piece of ribbon and at the center make a V shape.

place the V shape behind your button inside the top

Start to stitch into place going THROUGH the button

Finish and tie it off

seal the ends of the ribbon and your done!

present it to your little cutie .. which Jorja wasnt real thrilled about it at 530 am LOL which is when I did this tutorial lol
So there you have it

one cute halter w/ ribbon ties.
OR halter dress.
It goes on elastic under the arms and ties around the neck
the ties are more decorative that actually keeping it up.
Enjoy and I hope you like it !! Kat
