Default How to keep onesie from stretching?

I'm a total virgin when it comes to knits... this was my first experience actually sewing on a onesie (I've done embroidering, but no sewing). I made a super cute little tutu onesie and it looked great up until I sewed the ribbon on around the waist. I noticed that it stretched out the onesie in that area, so it's wider than the top half. How can I avoid this stretching in the future when sewing?

Not sure I always just use extra pins when sewing ribbon and I have never had a problem with it stretching. Good luck!

Measure the ribbon across the onsie to be sure you have the right length and cut the ribbon. It would be good to heat seal the ends so that they won't fray. That way you don't have to turn the ends under. Pin each end to a side and then go back and pin every few inches to keep the ribbon in place. Then sew the ribbon down. If you still have problems you could iron on some heat and seal hem tape to hold the ribbon down. Since the ribbon and onsie together are a little thick you may need to adjust the the tension(loosen) on your pressure foot. Try experimenting on something similiar until you get it.

I have started using printer paper or stablizer when sewing on onesies. I pin whatever Im sewing on the front of onesie then on the inside I put the paper or stablizer and pin it also.My problem is the feeder feet on the sewing machine grab the knit and pinch it, so it looks like it tried to ruffle it. Try using paper or stablizer and dont pull the onesie too much when sewing. I had never heard of anyone using paper. My mother told me about that little trick. My grandmother worked in a sewing factory and could look at a dress in a store, then go home and make it. She used old newspaper as a stablizer. you cant use new newspaper as the ink comes off easy. Printer paper works good because its heavier than say note book paper and the feeder feet dont tear it, but it tears away very easy.

Thanks for the tips! I'm going to try extra pins and if that doesn't work, maybe I will try the heat n' bond route.

You just need to put a stabilizer on the inside. You can buy tear away stabailzer at any fabric store.

When I am out I use paper towels or dry baby wipes. I have heard of people using coffee filters too.
