I have perfected the pillowcase dress......to an extent. Everything looks sooooo nice and cute, but....... I cannot EVER get the armholes to look right. I have tried bias tape, made my own bias with material left from dress, everything that I can think of. Am I missing something? Please, Please, Please give me tips. I have all of these really cute dresses and the armholes are unfinished.

I have intended to post pics of how to do this a thousand times but become all consumed with other things.

I LOVE THE DOUBLE FOLD WIDE BIAS TAPE - that is all I will use!

First:
Fold *in* the armhole about 1/4"inch along the entire armhole. Press with an iron.

Second:
Using the bias tape: I hold at the bottom of the arm hole and meaure up to the top - I like how it looks when finished and folded down for the ribbon to pass through the neckline.

Third:
Open up the folded bias tape and the seam you created with the iron. Place the shorter side of the bias tape to the actual fabric where the fold is down onto the inside of the dress. Stich close to the fold in the bias tape. Like the V in the bias take sits to the right of the ridge from the iron (seam) on the pillowcase dress.

Last:
Iron the bias tape as it would look finished. Now sew along the entire length on the side that is not already sewn down.

This probably does not make any sense what-so-ever in written words. It is really a task you must see in pics.

Once you *get* it - you will never just turn the armbhole over - this gives it MUCh more of a professional and *finished* look!

I hope this helps!
Amanda

Hi
Try this: Pillow Case Dress
I also make little cuts all around the armhole, to help the fabric stretch better
Good luck

I've only ever made two, and they were made out of bandanas. When i did those, I did not cut any armholes. I just sewed up the sides to where I wanted the bottom of the armhole to be. Since the bandanas were already hemmed all the way around I did not have to finish off anything.

I plan on making more, and what I think I am going to do is this:

1. hem the bottom (if it's not already)
2. sew up the sides to the bottom of the armhole
3. Holding the front of the dress with one hand and the back of the dress with the other hand, holding that open armhole direcly in front of you, turn under and press, starting at one end, going straight across your side seam and ending at the opposite end, hem
4. turn under top (where ribbon/elastic goes through) and hem

I don't plan on cutting any armhole at all.

Here's the bandana dress I made...

First pic...full length front view
Second pic...close up of armhole
Third pic...my hot hubby and baby girl in her bandana dress
