Hi
1. Get a pattern you like
2. Cut the pieces
3. Apply Heat n bond to the pieces
4. Iron the pieces onto the article of clothing
5. Set your sewing machine for a tight, but wide zig zag stitch
6. Using matching colors stitch around the outside of the pieces

Good luck

Somewhere I heard the tip of ironing a coffee filter and using that on the underside as a stabilizer. It works great and now I can skip the heat and bond step all together.

I do alot of applique and I think it is very important to use something like Heat and Bond to adhere the applique piece.
If it is not 'stuck down', after a couple of washings it looks really bad and it gets all wrinkled and does not lay nice and flat.
I would not do any applique without using the Heat and Bond.
A stablizer of some sort makes it easier to do the edge stitching.

I do it basically the same way as soccermom and sarahg.
I do use a stabilizer as well.
I have tried the coffee filters and some of the lightweight tearaway stabilizer but I had a hard time getting it all off.
I just started using the wash away stabilizer and I LOVE it.

JCaroline Creative has a nice tute on applique work too- if you need a visual

The easiest is have someone else do it for you LMAO
I have tried and I find it rather frustrating. Ironing the pieces down is fine, it's the satin stitching or close zig zag stitch around it that can be a pain. Especially round objects.

It is a bit tricky sometimes.
I kind of gave up on the satin stitch. UGH.
I just do a zig zag
