I have tried and I find it rather frustrating. Ironing the pieces down is fine, it's the satin stitching or close zig zag stitch around it that can be a pain. Especially round objects.

Same here - my satin stitch never looks nice. So I usually do a decorative stitch. I like to do a blanket stitch in a contrasting thread. Or I don't bond the edges & let them fray (I do a straight stitch just inside the lines.) I don't like that look for all appliques, though. Sometimes, if the applique is a square or something, I will tuck the edges under before I bond it so that there is only a smooth edge showing and then I do a straight stitch.
