Default Sewing Machine Question

Hi, I hope everyone is having a good weekend. I had a question about a sewing machine. i am attempting to learn to sew. I was sewing a long and checked the back of my material and there is a ton of loose thread. what would cause this and how would you go about fixing it? thank you

Check your tension, unthread and clean and oil your machine and bobbin, check your needle to make sure it isn't bent or dull.

Sometimes you have to change your tension depending on fabric, etc. Sometimes machines just go out of whack. There should be some way to tell what your factory preset tension is--mine is 4 and it has a line underneath it.

If you're getting loops on the underside of your fabric, it's very likely a bobbin issue. I've found that I start getting a lot of problems when I don't clean my machine enough. If you don't have a manual, you should be able to find one online. Once in a while you have to take your bobbin out and clean the insides with a little brush. I recommend finding the manual, since every machine is different. You also have to oil your machine. Having a crooked bobbin is possibly the problem or a result of another problem knocking it out of whack. Taking it out and putting it back in might help.

Most minor problems can be fixed through a good cleaning, oiling and rethreading. I always check the needle too. That's basically all you can do as a layperson. If all this doesn't work, you might want to talk to a repair shop. Good luck!

I agree...sounds like bobbin and/or tension problem. Check for the manual online. Some machines do NOT require oil. I know it sounds weird, but I know someone who has a Brother and the manual said do not oil.
