Default Why are ruffles hard to sew on my machine?

I had my heavy duty needle in my sewing machine and I had preruffled some satin ribbon by hand. I wanted to add it to my DDs knit pants just by sewing down the middle of the ribbon, but my NEEDLE BROKE? HUH? What did I do wrong? It was a heavy duty needle. It kept getting caught too.

I ended up doing it by hand but it was a pain! I want to do several of her pants like this for fall and need to know what I did wrong.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

You need to use a ball point needle for knit fabrics. If that doesn't work your bobbin casing might need cleaning out or replaced. Also recheck the tension.

Some times I just rethread it all and then it works. But above post hit all points.

Were you pulling on the ribbon at all as you sewed? If you do you will pull the needle off center and it will hit the base plate and break.

Thank you ladies, I will be sure to purchase a ball point needle.

What tension should my machine be on? What number? (I'm obviously an amateur!) HAHA!

If I decide to do this to a pair of denim pants would I go back to my heavy duty needle?

I wasn't pulling the ribbon but great point, thank you!

Thanks again!

I normally keep my tension between 3 and 4. I rarely use a heavy duty needle but it wouldn't hurt to use one on thicker material. I mostly sew lightweight cotton, or knit fabric so I stick with the ball point needle.

Another trick to sewing ruffles...if it's a lightweight fabric set your tension on the highest..mine is 9 and use a long running stitch and it ruffles itself. This method doesn't work very good on thicker fabric.

Your machine should have an attachment to make ruffles, it makes ruffles fast and gathers evenly. The foot attachment gathers as it sews.

PLEASE! Don't EVER sew satin or knit with a heavy duty needle. That's asking for large holes in your fabric. And the ladies were right you definitely need a ballpoint needle for knits. Needles break for various reasons and pushing your fabric thru instead of letting the feed dogs do the work is one of the biggest offenders besides putting too much thru or not having the needle all the way up the shank.

Thank you so much ladies, I purchased ball point needles and will give them a try this weekend.

My machine is just a very basic brother machine, it didnt come with any attachments, and unfortunately right now I can't afford a ruffler foot for it. But I think this will work. :-)

Here was the final product... I know it will look much better when I can get my machine to do it for me. :-)
