Default Sewing machine Question...what to buy

I have a bacic sewing class that I'm attending on Thursday. I have always been interested in sewing, wanted to know what is a good starter machine to buy.
Thanks for any help

I have a Brother 900D and love it. I think the 350 is the next lower machine if you don't want to spend that much, but the machine tells me what I'm doing wrong so it's basically fool proof...as long as I can sew in a straight line-lol. It has embroidery too which is what I bought it for but haven't tried that part yet because I'm waiting on my class. It is so easy to thread and use though!

ETA: Walmart has the Disney machine, but the software for the embroidery is not in the machine so you have to buy that separately. After all of that, it's just as much as the one from the local dealer-just in case you might want to use that. The ones in the Walmart stores are a "cheaper" grade of the ones at the local dealer-so just for sewing, it would be fine, but to do a lot of the other stuff, it would require upgrades that the dealer machines already have.

You can't beat the computerized machines! Mine tells me when I'm doing something wrong, what foot to use, auto adjusts the bobbin tension, etc. I have a Viking Iris that does regular sewing and embroidery. I love it and it just now needs some servicing after 4 years. Another great thing is that the case is closed, so I don't have to dust inside parts or oil. I just dust the bobbin casing and that's it!

Brother makes good machines, and Janome and Viking are great as well. Brother, Singer, and Viking have the most accessories available, with Janome being a little harder to find parts for. (not impossible, just go to dedicated sewing stores not sewing and crafts.) I started with a Janome from Sears and was very happy with it. It was not powerful enough to hem jeans, though. The viking zips though several layers of denim like that! (In fact, they let me try the machine and showed me that, and I was sold!)
