Default What size area??

Hi ladies,
I'm really wanting to get a good sewing machine that does embroidery also. I want to be able to embroider names, initials, and whatever else people would like mainly on dresses, bibs..etc. Is a 4x4 area typical of what you guys use? It seems small to me for a whole name that may be long such as Stephanie.

Also is there any machines that you would recommend? I don't want to have to spend anothe couple of hundred $$s on software for more fonts and stuff once I get machine...please help!!
Thanks in advance

Good luck!! I have the Singer Futura, it has the 4X4 and the 5X7 hoops. I would NEVER buy a machine with only a 4X4 hoop. Once you get it, you will want a bigger hoop guaranteed!! I also bought the embird programs for extra fonts and being able to do my own designs. So you figure $500-$600 for the machine and then another $400-$500 in software. It is a really good machine though!

Totally agree about the 4 x 4, you will find out immediately you need a bigger field. Buy the most machine you can afford!
Embird is great! That would be my first puchase after the machine. It does about everything but digitize and you can even get their program for that if you want.
I have a Brother ULT machine and it has a 6 x 10 hoop that I use all the time. It's nice to be able to do a jacket back if I want.
Don't even think you will be able to get by with a 4 x 4 cause you won't. My opinion is that the machine purchase with that would be a waste of money. Spend more and get something that will work for a wide range of designs...you sure won't be sorry.

Hi
My machine has a 4x4 hoop, and it works for most things. I still cry when I see beautiful 5x7 designs that I cant do though
Good luck

thanks ladies. I have been trying to find good machine that does both sewing and embroidery with a larger area than 4X4. It's hard to find for less than $1000. Do you think I would be better off buying 2 seperate machines? All I want sewing machine for is to make my daugter dresses so a basic machine would do. Any suggestions would be great!!

I live in Augusta GA & one of our local sewing shops had a Brother that sews & embroiderys for around $600 - $800. I think. My neighbor is wanting to purchase one. I have a Brother Innovis 1200. I do agree with the other ladies on getting one that does 4x4 & 5x7. You have ability to emrbodiery more. Once you start, you can't stop. There are a lot of websites that you can get free embroidery patterns at. Our local sewing shop is www.jeffssewingandvacs.com if you want to check them out.
