Chalkboard mat - how to attach chalk?

My chalk mats are all made for DD's 1st bday but I decided last minute to add a holder of some sorts for a piece of chalk (or 2).

I want the chalk attached to the side or chalk-side of the mat, has anyone done this? Any ideas how?

I can't seem to picture what to do to hold the chalk tightly enough so it actually stays. Hope this makes sense

Have you seen the crayon roll-ups? Maybe you could incorporate something like that? I am not sure what a chalk mat is, but I know that the roll-ups are easy to make and hold the crayons in nice & tight. Good luck!
