Getting a ranked website?

I've read some of the threads here. But I still don't get it. I was reading to get into the yahoo directory it's 299.00. Is that right? What do you have to do?
Do you gets a higher ranking for visits to your site? I'm clueless.
I put my website into google.
I'm getting my business cards and postcards in a few days.
I put my logo here in my sig and in my email.

It takes about 6 mos to get indexed and brought up in the pages. So I'm told. Yahoo takes longer than google. I was doing well in google for my keywords and then I disappeared. I was told that it has to do with links I need many new links each week going from other sites to mine. I have never shown up in MSN either.

Put your info in the dmoz directory that one is free but it can take up to 6 mos. for your info to show up. I registered eons ago and still am not listed, but it is worth the wait.
