Default tutus for teens

I need to make some tutus for teens and have neve made one for someone that age. My question is do I need the waist or hip measurement? There's quite a difference so just subtracting from the hip and hoping it will work either way won't be sufficient. I'm used to dealing with little ones that have no hips.

It will sit on their hips usually if it falls down -depending on how you make the tutu! I always pull my skirts up to the waist -the wrap skirts and elastic ones and always ends up slipping down -its its tight on the waist -that would stop it from slipping down --maybe ask -it it does sit on the waist -it will make it shorter

That's what I thought (it would be shorter if on their waist), I think I'll ask them before I start cutting tulle, and if they don't answer I will go with their hips, as I'm pretty sure that's where they would wear them anyway. Thanks!

I would use the hip measurement but subtract half an inch or so to keep it from being too loose.

Thanks ladies. We've decided hips, I figured that would be the case since that's where most teens wear their jeans now. Wow do I sound old! lol Oh well after three kids and the latest one only 9 weeks with a c-section my jeans definitely are no longer worn on my hips!

I just had a 20 year old contact me (want a tutu for part of her halloween costume) and she gave me the measurement for where it'll sit on her hips (38 in), BUT i've never made one for someone older than 5....so what did i do? lol....i have one for my 4 year old niece sitting here and i squeeeeezed my ass into it to figure out how much longer id need to make the tulle for an older girl (im 24) and the outcome? lol well, it worked!.................and i stretched out my niece's waistband lol. BUT easily repaired and i'm starting the 20 year old's tutu today

P.S. I'm making it 13 inches for the 20 year old (I do double layers, so making it 26 inches +1 for the knot)

A couple years ago I had some premade tutus from Halo Heaven for "filler" in my booth and actually sold several to teens who just pulled them on over their jeans and went happily on their way.

Thanks everyone! I made them according to a size chart and looking at them I was sooo worried, they looked too big, but they fit perfectly! I don't mean that to insult them lol It's all a matter of perspective, comparing them to a small child!

I made them 14" long and they were just right. They did indeed end up wearing them on their hips, and they were very happy with them!
