Talking Re: How did you learn to make Bows?

My family is very crafty and the gene passed me. I realized that I could make bows for wreaths that were actually decent. Last Halloween I needed to spruce up my girls costume's and I bought ribbon that matched not knowing what I was going to do. It ended up bows and I stopped after that, always having the intention to learn but no time. Over the summer though I started watching YouTube videos and teaching myself.
Now I am addicted.
And I stink at it, so I'm also frustrated!!!

Practice lots of practice. I started by watching everything I could on youtube, taking apart bows to see how they were made(i bought out a bow maker and she had over 6 hundred bows so this was a good way to learn by taking them apart) , watching a how to video from the bow maker I bought out (taylor made bows), and eventually I became confident in my own skills and decided I liked to make my bos a different way and went from there. Really I hat a lot of ribbon to play with and a lot of "no thank you" bows that never made it to a show! I enjoy crafting but since getting into running group buys I do make less then I used to because I just don't have as much time to make them. I still do a few craft shows each season, but I love supplying goodies to all of my bow friends and customers!

Thanks,

Karen

Just keep at it and you will one day get it... it's like throwing darts as my son's teacher said... one day one of the many darts you throw out there just happens to stick in the bulls eye! I have to say I essentially knew how to make a twisted bow and did everything right but they never looked quite right... one day I simply made a slight adjustment in the twisting of my bow and made sure the back pieces were straight and voila! It looked really good. It will happen if you keep at it and keep looking at other bows and videos! Good luck to you!

Mine was a hobby. I embroider and thought- hmm why not learn to do bows.... I am still in the learning phase but thought I would pair them up with my embroidery items when I become better at them.

I have watched youtube videos, gotten tutorials and recently purchased the BBM! AND lots of practice!

I first learned by pulling apart a simple bow and figuring out how it was made. Then I sat down and I started building my own stacked bows based on the way that one bow as made and what I saw here and there. I tried a few things to get the bows to look how I wanted them to look.

So now when I look at tutorials, I can add some of the "traditional" methods into my process and vice versa.

I first began making wreath, christmas tree & pew bows for friends and family. Then when my daughter was born 2 years ago with no hair, I tried my skills at making hairbows for her. We received so much attention from people when out in public, I decided to make a profession out of it.
