Default Is there a rule for layered bows?

I want to start making more of the large layered boutique bows with spikes. I have the technique down (more or less) but I never know how to choose the ribbon. I can get a bunch together that match color and patternwise but I don't know which to use as center bow, spikes, knots, etc. Is there a rule?

Any ideas would be appreciated. If this is something that is covered in TOTTs I understand if you can't tell.

I personally think there is no rule. Just try and see if you like it. Some general rules about colours I think but not too many, e.g if the top bow is already busy with print, you'll not want the 3/8" surrounding also busy with the same prints but rather simple in contrast colour to make it stand out etc.

Well may be there are, but I do not know. I am afraid I ain't be of nay help. sorry.

Here's a link where Melissa posted some great measurements. Hope this helps.

No rules that I know of I usually just pick the ribbon I want and then play around with it to see which I like as the center bow, spikes, etc. I tend to use the ribbon I use for the bow for at least one spike but that's just a rule I made up myself

I sorta have a pattern for mine. Like Lynn said- if the center is busy, then surrounding loops are solids or dots.. things like that.

I have seen bows for sale that are sooo cool looking, and I would of never in a million years put those colors together like that.
