Default Question about rolled fabric flowers

Ok please don't make fun of me for asking this because I never work with fabric. I am trying to make the "shabby" roses where the fabric has been ripped. My question is...How do you rip the fabric so that the strip in an even width all the way down? I just ripped like 4 strips and one end is skinner or wider than the the end that I started.

Are you tearing the same fabric or trying different ones? Start at the top and tear down, often fabric isn't cut straight so I always tear the first strip and throw it in my spare scraps basket (to do something with some day) and from there on my tears are straight. You can cut the fabric also, it will still fray, tearing it is just quicker!

you'd also be amazed at how some fabric is way off straight of grain (threads run perpendicular). if it's good quality cotton with tight/good thread count (like quilting fabric) it tears quite well/even width strips.

but, if you get into a looser weave of fabric, with less thread count, it could be off.

also, just the tearing will throw the width of the strip off sometimes.

sooooo . . . it all depends on what fabric!

Have you tried tearing from the salvage edge to salvage edge, after your first tear, you should be able to get an even width of fabric.

I always cut mine to make sure the width is even.
