Default chalk mats - what is your backing fabric?

I asked this in someone else's thread, but figured I would start a thread about it.

I managed to score 3 yards of chalkboard fabric locally for under $9 a yard! I'm going to make some placemats, but unsure on what I am going to use for backing. Most of the ones I see on etsy use another oil cloth fabric or a laminated fabric on the back side. I see how this would be helpful in cleaning up the mess from the child's meal.

What do you use and why?

I have made, probably close to 75 of these and I have
always used regular cotton fabric that has been scotchguarded.
I don't like how the oilcloth looks. To me it looks cheap and wrinkly. I buy quality fabric and treat it with two coats of scotchguard.
In all the ones I have made and sold I have never, ever had anyone tell me that it is hard to clean or that it has food stains on it.
I like being able to use regular fabric because the patterns are endless.
I use a fusible web between the fabric and the chalkcloth and I don't get any of the wrinkling that happens with that thin oilcloth.
That's just my personal opinion about making these.

I have that iron on vinyl. I have tried it and I don't care for it. And then there is the chance you take with an iron on the chalk fabric and the vinyl.
If the way I do them starts to be a problem then I will look for an alternative, but for now my theory is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! LOL

so judy--you have a material that you iron on any cotton fabric and it puts a vinyl coating on it? just making sure i read it right!!

where did you get the iron on vinyl at? i was going to use the oil cloth i had--but would rather use cute cottons

dumb question too--what is fusible webbing?

i also have another question about these (and since jenni and judy--yall are both soooo sweet w/ always offering help--i will ask )

how do you make a pocket for the chalk and earser? most of the ones i see on the internet are rolled up--so i never see the pocket!! if you dont want to reveal--understandable

what size do you make yours? i have 2 yards coming and want to get the most out of them--i am thinking the are 45" wide--so is 18 x 15 too small?
