Default Attaching Tutu to Denim Skirt

Just wondering how you would go about attaching a tutu to the bottom of a denim skirt. I have tried sewing the tutu to the skirt (made using the slip knot method), but found it to be too bulky underneath the skirt. I then tried sewing a tutu and then sewing that to the skirt, but it still seems to be bulky. I'm making my tutus as I would normally, on an elastic waist, and then attaching that to the denim skirt. Should I ditch the elastic and make the tutu on a ribbon waist or ditch the waist altogether and simply sew around the top of the tutu, gather it and then sew to the skirt (thereby hopefully eliminating some of the bulk)? Any ideas?

BTW, this forum is fantastic!

I have never done this, and know I have a tut on it somewhere on my other computer at home. However, I would sew all my tulle strips together with a running stitch and then gather the tulle as much as you want to make it fit, pin it to the skirt and then stitch it on.

Which technique did you use - did you sew on a ready made tutu or did you gather the tulle and sew it on? I'd love to see a pic if you have one.

I made two of these this week.
I layer long 6inch wide strips of tulle together. and ran a gather stitch down the center.

I then gathered them to the length of the skirt, and pined them directly onto the skirt. Next a ran then through my machine on a straight stitch (had to go very slow).

Then I fluffed.

Hope this helps! I didn't use elastic or ribbon on my tutu.

With the stich - you mean you ran the stich in the middle of each strip, then pulled it together so that way it makes it the fold in the middle right?

Thanks for all your help girls. Here's the finished product... Decided to go with the straight stitch, gather the tulle, then sew it onto the skirt. It didn't turn out too bad, just not overly happy with the stitching. All up there's a tad over 25yds of tulle.

Just wanted to post some updated pics of my denim tutus. They're a bit of an improvement on my first attempt (see post above). They're generating a lot of interest at our local markets (in Australia). I haven't seen anything like them over here as yet. Hope you like.
