I really don't get how everyone expects to be taught what we do, family and strangers alike. They wouldn't walk into a kitchen and ask for recipes. They just buy the food off of the menu and are happy with it. Why is this any different?
I agree!

I can definetly see where you feel frustrated, but I think you could make it work in some way. I'm saying this because you guys are/have been so close. She's probably just excited about living close to you again and sharing this hobby with you. For alot of us though (I'm assuming you as well), after awhile it becomes less of a hobby and more of a business. That no longer feels as fun to share everything. But maybe you could mention that you'd be willing to share booth fees with her if she wants to learn/offer a craft that you don't currently make yourself. For instance, tutus. Then you could operate like 2 seperate businesses but still do things together, maybe?

wow, i like how she assumes that she is just going to be working right along with you! if it were me i would tell her one of these: i am sorry but i will be unable to teach you anything since i am so busy and the spare time that i have i share with my kids and husband' OR 'sure! but i would have to hire you as an assistant and you would have to learn as we go' (and if she chooses this option then i would teach her SOME things but not all!! maybe the smaller tedious things like lining clips, making spikes, making itty bitty bows...i would just bore her to death so maybe she would get discouraged. but again that's just me )

Hmm, that is tough...

Just throwing thoughts at you, maybe have her learn things you don't want to make, or things you don't enjoy making? Let her know you don't really want to split the profit on things you already make, so her making the same thing won't really bring in more income or customers. And from what I understood she doesn't do as good of a job on the bows you make anyhow so maybe she could find another hair accessory she is good at. Just from looking around here you can see people that make awesome bows, but can't figure out how to sew, or ones that make great headbands, but can't quite get bows down. And then there are those that seem to do everything perfectly and I turn a bit green when I see them! If she really wants to help, she will help to grow your business and hers, otherwise she just wants the shortcut and doesn't care if she hurts your income.

Everyone here has paid their dues, burned fingers, dealt with more money going out than coming in, thrown mistakes away, etc, etc. If it really means something to you, and you enjoy it, you will take your lumps and learn like everyone else. Advice, hints, tips, links, and so much more are free for anyone that wants to take the time to find them.

I think you said this perfectly. I think too many people will let you take the risk but then when they see you are doing well then they want to step in and be partners. It just doesn't work that way.

I would just say what you said, "this is how I feed my kids." Tell her nicely that she can do her thing and you can do yours. Everyones talents are different and she should stick to what she is good at.
