Default Are tutus washable?

I've been making all these tutus for Christine to wear in one of her ballet classes (yes, I'm obsessed with them now! lol )

Anyway, one of the moms was sitting next to me commenting on the tutu and how (paraphrasing here..) "it's nice for a few times but otherwise impractical because it can't be washed".

I know nylon tulle is washable by itself (before it's made into anything)... but I was wondering.. is she right?

Are tutus not washable?

I don't mean in a washing machine per se, but can they be hand-cleaned/spot cleaned and then be ok? I really have no idea.

Thanks girls

Spot cleaned but not put in the washing machine is what I've always heard.

The tulle is washable, machine or hand, but the embellishments might not be (flowers, ribbons) so if they can't be removed you'll need to spot clean the tutu. The other issue is construction, if the tutu is sewn you can machine wash it and if it's tied you may want to hand wash especially if it's tied using slipknots.

Spot clean if you can, but if it gets really messed up then you can wash it by hand in COLD water. Then hang to dry. I would not put it in the washing machine.

Tutus should also be hung when not being worn so they don't get 'sad' looking. Unfortunately, they do eventually lose that poof but you can starch it to get some of it back.

If it's wrinkly you can use a clothes steamer or you can hang it by the shower and turn your shower on really hot.

I agree!

When that mom first told me they weren't washable, she asked me what I was going to do with Christine's tutu when it got dirty. I told her I was going to throw it away and make her a new one. Glad to know I won't have to do that!
