Default attaching plastic embellishments

Hi everyone. I am a total newbie, and I have tried searching but I am not even sure I am using the right terminology. I am new to making bows for my 3 year old, and I thought I was doing pretty good. BUT I am finding that the plastic embellishments I have hot glued on to the lined clips are coming off. Is it possible I am using too much glue? Not the right kind of glue? I just bought a cheapie hot glue gun. Could that be my problem? Should I be doing something to add texture to the back of the plastic piece? I've noticed they are pretty smooth and I am wondering if I should use sand paper on the back to rough it up so it sticks better? I am at a loss, and thought I should run it past the experts.

Lastly, sometimes my ribbon comes off the clip. Again, I am wondering if this is an issue with the amount of hot glue (too much, too little?), or the quality of the glue/gun??

Sorry for being such a newb....but we've got to start somewhere, right? Thanks in advance for any insight you can give me!

Jen

I use a strong glue for embellishments, like E6000. As for the hot glue coming off the clips are you using a high temp hot glue? That is the most preferred with high temp glue not multi temp glue, hope that helps.

I think it may be a multi purpose...I will try a high temp. This is something I just thought I would try for fun, so I didn't really invest too much $$ and bought a really cheap gun. I have found I really like it, so I think I should invest in a better one. Also, again I am showing my newbie-ness, but is E6000 a type of glue stick?

Thanks so much for your help!

I've been making bows for a couple of years with the same cheap glue gun from walmart! So I don't think I would spend a lot on a glue gun. I think that you will see a difference with the high temp glue. Also sometimes if you let your hot glue dry too much before putting it on the clip it doesn't hold as well. The glue has to be nice and hot to stick well! HTH

I also have a cheap little hot temp glue gun from walmart. It works very well, my lined clips have gone through the washer and stay lined. Never had a problem. With the plastic embellishments I just learned that you definitley want to use the E6000 instead of hot glue, lesson learned. Thankfully while I was making my first one.

I also recommend the E6000. They will not come off with this glue. Very bad fumes so be careful. I bought some surgical masks to use when I do bottle caps and use the E6000.

As far as the glue gun. I got a $5 one from HL and use the cheap Wal-Mart (Ad-Tech Brand) glue sticks and they work great. The glue is a little stringy, but I have no problems with them, but have heard other people who dont like it. HTH!
