Wink Re: I want to learn to crochet!!!

I am self-taught, so take heart...it is possible!!!!

There are some AWESOME videos on youtube and I really think that's the best way to learn. It's really difficult to stare at pictures and try to figure it out. It's so much easier to see it done by a real person.

I have some patterns for sale in my etsy shop (mostly for children's hats) that are written especially for beginners. I really try to write in a way that's easy for anyone to understand.

The other great thing about the patterns you buy on etsy is that most sellers also offer email support if you get stuck or have a question. So if you're having trouble understanding terms in the pattern you can contact the author directly, which is wonderful

youtube videos, books, a person who can show you the basics and tons and tons of practice!!
That's how I learned not even two years ago and my biggest sellers on etsy are crocheted items. I'm SO glad I learned but you gotta stick with it.

Try Jo-Anns or Michael's - they both usually have crochet classes if you are more on a hands-on learner. YouTube has some really good videos for learning also.

Good luck!

just dive in/take the plunge and make a scarf (that you'll probably never use or give to your dog) . . . and then practice a row of single crochet and then work up to double crochet. it probably won't be parallel on the sides, but it's a good starting point to get comfortable with the tension. just don't get toooo small of a crocket hook to start/practice. i think a J is a good size/you can see your stitches.

the hardest part is holding the yarn/getting your hands in the right position . . . utube videos are great like the others said.

also start asking around . . . i'm sure you'll find someone at a senior center that knows how and would love to show you.

edit . . . once you've mastered a square, then you can go onto bigger & better things . . . like a circle!

edit . . . and you can just use your fingers & yarn . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FeEEWiA_kY

Funny you should post this now. I found a tut on utube to make mini crochet circles that turn into butterflies. Really cute & I really want to make them. It looked so easy until she kept going. I think I can get the chain stitch, but the rest? Hmmm. Something to add to my list. lol

I taught myself after trying to learn from my husbands grandmother. I am left handed so it was really hard for me to sit and watch someone else do it.

I bought this book, it is written for younger kids to be able to follow, but it is so easy and I still use it from time to time for different things, it has the EASIEST granny square pattern I have ever found in it
