I thought the same thing as you...it's a contradiction, really - they think they aren't getting the one that's been on someone's kid's head (when many times, they really ARE) but yet they think that the bows on the "dirty floor" are the ones they'll be getting. BUT, it isn't about what is technically right or wrong, it's about customer perception.

This insight is invaluable. Seriously!!

And I was really wondering about what they would think about the modeled bows. Glad to know the outcome. Even though you've got a small sample size, Maxine, your study is probably extremely accurate to our target market as a whole.

Funny thing is, even when I list something with just a quick photo of the bow in my daughter's hair - no fancy backgrounds, no pettiskirts or props or anything, I get more views, hearts and sales than when I just do a plain white background product photo. People like to be able to picture the item in use, I think.

Yeah, those photos don't do it for me. Very artistic, nicely done, but to me the out of context-ness of it, is a put off.

When my Mom started looking around at knit and crochet items on Etsy, she told me a lot of people hang their items in trees and lay them on bushes, and I was thinking, what in the world are they doing that for?!

I don't know, seems to me that a lot of the most popular and busy Etsy stores are ones with really high quality professional "stock photos" of their items and they list them as "your item will be similar to the one shown, blah blah blah and custom made for you"....

But I also see some stores that do well, with the appeal of having the exact item photographed, ready to ship.

For most of the hair bows and headbands, though, you can remake from the model, and expect it to come out almost identical.

Thanks for sharing this. It's always good to have the consumers point of view.

I am just starting out so I can't say I know very much about the bow biz but I don't understand why you would want to take a photo of your bow and have everything around it as a distraction, dirty carpet, distressed wood... or for that matter, a photo out of focus? Before anything is posted, you should have someone take a look and give an opinion. When it doesn't look professional , I just pass right on by those listings.

Ill all paranoid now lol. I have a facebook group where I sell my crochet items and bows. And I usually take photos on my white table and its nice and clean, or sometimes on a soft colored blanket I have(looks nice). But a couple times Ive taken photos on my hardwood floor, which I know is nice and clean, but I wonder what other might be thinking looking at my photos. I think Im gonna redo some. This is good insight into the customers mind Thanks.

Thanks for sharing that perspective. It's easy to forget that many people don't see online listings the same way and appearances are so important when it comes to product photos.

Hmmm...I had the same thought some others had, why do they think they are getting the "floor" bow but not the "head" bow. Hmmm, in the end, it doesn't really matter why they think that, just that this is the way potential clients think.

Maxine, this has been invaluable. I know I tend to create things to order, but clients wouldn't know that unless they read everything or know me, which, even I don't read everything, so I have to assume others aren't reading entire listings, shop policies, etc.

I think their thoughts are something like this (which is what I gathered by listening to them):

They don't think they're getting the bow on the girl's head because it's being worn. The object of the bow is to wear it in your hair. So, if they see it being worn (meaning modeled), they think it is now used (because it has been used for what it was intended for). They believe the bow they'll receive will be from the seller's stock. (I can understand what they mean. I'm sure they don't want to pay full price then receive a bow that has scant hairs on it or whatnot).

With the bow on the floor, they can see it isn't being "used". It's just getting dirty lying on the floor.

(geez, I hope that all made sense lol )
