Default What went wrong with my tutu?

I mean, how hard can this be? I measured my daughter around the chest since this was a dress, unrolled and measured 75 yds of tulle. And guess what? Not enough tulle for the whole thing AND it's too big?

I measured the elastic and subtracted 1 inch.

I subtract 4 inches also....and when I do my dresses, I use about 100 yards of tulle for a 4 year old. You could find where your elastic goes together and rip out the thread and resew it a couple inches less.

I'm going to cut the elastic and resew, add a few more strands of tulle. She measured 19" around her chest, I made it 18" and I think I tied the tulle too tight

So when I knot the tulle, I leave it loose? What if they come unraveled? I LOVED making it and picking the colors. I want to make my daughter 100s of them. I find working with tulle way more relaxing than anything else...

Play around with the knotting, you want it to be a tight knot, but you don't want the "loop" around the elastic too tight, that is what makes the elastic stretch.

When I make them for my daughter, I actually leave the elastic un-sewn and then when I think it is enough to fit her, then I wrap around her chest, get it to the width I need, then sew the ends together. I knot one end of the elastic to keep it from falling off. All of my other tutu creations for customers, they want the headbands used, so I haven't ran into that problem with them. However, the last tutu I made my daughter, I used the headband material (bty from HL) and and subtracted several inches from my daughter's width, and it was WAY too big! Thank goodness for cool weather and her wearing a long sleeved tee underneath!
