Default No Sew tutu question

I need to keep this short since I'm taking the girls ice skating in a couple of minutes.

Long story short, I measured DD1's waist at 22". I added one inch when I cut the 3/4" no roll elastic.

I'm using 6" wide tulle strips, using the slip knot / loop method. I didn't think I was over tightening or pushing them too close together but I got 2 spools on (28" long if it makes a difference) and realized the elastic seems to be getting longer. It looks like I've gained about 3". I tried loosening it back up with no luck.

My game plan now is to keep going and occasionally having DD1 try it on. When it's almost full enough I'll cut the elastic to the correct size.

I know some directions allow about 1" for the stretching but 3" with the potential for 6" seems excessive.

Believe it or not there is still a little stretch left on the elastic that's filled with tulle.

Any suggestions for future reference? Or, better yet, suggestions on how to correct the over stretching?

When I measure and cut I subtract from the length of elastic I will use.
For ex..if dd is measuring 22 inches I usually cut 19 or 20 inches of elastic (sew it together overlapping another inch or so) and once I tie all my tulle on it stretches out to be the perfect size. I've made far to many tutus w/exact measurements all to find they stretch alot and get bigger than I needed them to. If that makes any sense..HTH!

Thanks for the input.

I've done a fair amount of reading no sew tutu instructions and had read conflicting advice. On the one hand I'd read you should add an inch to account for the 1/2 overlap when sewing. On the other hand I'd read that there will be some stretching, as much as an inch or so. Which is consistent with your experience.

But nothing prepared me for the possibility that I'd gain 3" about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through adding the tulle.

I'd be concerned that I was doing something drastically wrong but believe it or not the elastic with tulle on it still has some stretch left.

This project is salvageable. I just want it to be easier, with less waist (no pun intended) the next time around.

Everytime I make tutus I always subtract 2-3" from the measurement I want and still overlap the elastic 1/2" to 1" for sewing it together. I find that the elastic stretches quite a bit.

It is confusing when you first start because some say add an inch and some say subtract a few inches. I learned the hard way and added an inch and had a tutu that fell off of my daughter's hips lol

I take off about 2" and overlap about 1/2 an inch or so.

When I calculate how much tulle I need I still calculate the proper waist size, not the elastic size.

For example, my daughters waist is 20 inches. I cut the elastic at 18 inches but I'll still use 100 strips of tulle (20"x5/inch), the elastic will stretch out to the 20" I need.

I'm still fairly new though, I might start cutting it 3" shorter just to be on the safe side as this last tutu I made seemed to be a bit big (the tulle seemed... thicker?!)
