Default Anyone actually use real silk organza, satin or chiffon on their singed flowers?

I only use polyester blends because I thought it was the only type that will melt. I've had great success with it. Recently, though, I was looking at some lovely wedding hair accessories on Etsy, and saw that the person making them was calling them singed "silk" organza, or "silk" chiffon flowers. Is it possible? Just wondering if I need to buck up the extra $ for real silk so I can sell my flowers for $49.99?!?! lol!

Ok, I'm gonna answer my own question...my mom told me she saw a segment on Martha Stewart last week where the guest was making...you guessed it, singed silk flowers. I looked up the tut on her website, and it looks great! Did anyone else see this? They recommend silk taffeta or dupioni, which I have...gonna try it out. I just always thought the natural fibers wouldn't singe, just burn...we'll see.

Is this the flower tut yu mentioned?: http://www.marthastewart.com/article/silk-lotus-flower

I found it valuable for another technique for cutting my fabric, etc. Like you, I use the polyester blends. I think I'll stick with them because I have a boatload.

Yes! That's the one! Thanks for posting the link, I meant to and forgot. lol. I tried it, and you're right, great cutting technique - I'm gonna use it for sure. However, I tried to singe my dupioni silk - Horrible! It did not look cute, to say the least. Bubbled and burt and made the color of the silk fade around the edges. So...I'm sticking with the polys...if it ain't broke don't fix it, right? As for that flower from Martha's show, I think it's lovely without the singed edges.

If it's burning you're holding it too close to the flame or for too long. I made corsages out of real silk for a whole wedding party, didn't have a problem.

I'll keep at it. What type of silk did you use? I tried dupioni, maybe that's the problem.

I did some using real silk and oraganza...
Burned my fingers a couple times but had fun doing them.

i hope you haven't cut your 3" squares yet . . . this is a poster's comment under the article . . . although it might look pretty/better at 3"!

according to the TV show, the squares for the flowers start at 6 inches, not 3.
