Red face Questions about Korker Bows

I want to start making My own Korkers so I have a few questions if you all dont mind.If I want to make a Korker that will be 4in.long when finished, how long will the Ribbon have to be to start with? What type Starch do you like best?I want to use Zebra Print and was wondering if it's harder to Kork? I ask because I have some 7/8 that is so stiff it isnt funny.I hope you all will share this info and I'm saying Thanks in advance,Susan

I have never used starch on korkers and my ribbon stays curly. I think printed ribbon kords just as well as solid ribbon. Its probably a little stiffer but not much.

I use the starch in a spray can.
I haven't ever done a 4 inch Korker. but I usually cut my ribbon at the same length I want my bow.

I usually cut my korkers about 1/2" smaller than I want my final bow length - so I would cut 3 1/2" pieces if I were making a 4" bow. I bought 3/8" zebra print ribbon from the HG store and it korks great...perfect curl with no bleeding! As far as starching, I usually wet my ribbon with plain water just before I put it in the oven and then spray with the starch solution (1 part sta-flo, 1 part water) as soon as I pull them out of the oven.

You do have to?

I never have. Is this something I'm doing wrong?

You don't have to, the Kork just seems to stay better for me. I starch and use hair spray. Also you can't use cheap ribbon or the Michaels brand as they will come unkorked.

My dark colors I bake at 250 degrees for about 25 minutes. My light colors I bake at 225 degrees for about 25 minutes. I also starch before I bake. Be careful when starching white. If you starch too much they become yellowish. Good Luck!!

Do you starch with the 50-50 sta-flo/water combination?

I have never starched my korkers. I starch my other bows, but I still have korkers from 6-7 years ago that are just as curly as ones made last month. I just wet mine a bit before I bake them.

I also cut my ribbon about 1/2" shorter them I want my bow. (already korked measurement)
