Give this tutorial for loopy flowers a try....
http://www.ohsohappytogether.blogspot.com/

I think they are similar to the rolled version. I think you would need to make cuts closer together and roll up fairly tight. Good luck! I'm going to try too. This blog site also has a ton of other tuts that are easy and fun!

I think they are the flat method but once you start stacking them together it creates that look?

Or maybe a couple of flats stacked together and the middle the gather one?

Just throwing some suggestions out there!

Need to get my felt and start playing around with it.

I make these too and you just get a long piece and cut the slits and roll it. You can sew or glue. As you roll, you can taper down and when you are done you can also push up through the bottom and pull the sides down and it creates a rounded look. Hope that makes sense.

do you use wool or acrylic felt? how long a piece of felt and do you do a running stitch first and gather it?

I only use wool felt with my clips and headbands. Never tried acrylic. You can stitch a line through the bottom. How long a piece depends on how big you want the flower to be. Just cut a piece and experiment. Also depends on how thick your felt it. Even if you get all pure 100% wool felt or all wool blend felt, different pieces and colors are different thicknesses so you have to judge by how thick the felt it too. Try different lengths to get different sizes. Oh and I don't gather. You don't need to. Just roll it.
