Question Inserting ribbon on a crochet bean hat. How?

Hi everyone!

I have some questions about inserting ribbon through the loops in a crochet beanie hat. I have a removable flower clip on an alligator clip, but I want to have ribbon looped through the beanie.

1. How is the ribbon usually cut off? Should I cut and glue the ends together, or just tie a knot where the flower will go?
Should the ribbon be removable too?

2. Lastly, how do I know that I'm giving it enough slack for the size of the hat so that when someone puts it on, it's not really tight because of the ribbon? These hats are strechy, so I'm unsure just how much slack to give it.

thank you sooo much!
