Question Postal scale and shipping

I am looking into setting up a website and posting things on etsy but..... I have NO clue about shipping! I saw a postal scale at walmart, is this something I need? How do you ladies ship just ONE bow? I am a total newbie at this whole shipping thing! Any help would be GREAT!!!

yes, get yourself a postal scale! I got mine at Target for about $30ish. Package up one of your bows and weigh it. Then check on the USPS website for shipping costs. When you sell through Paypal you can actually purchase your shipping label through them and it is a bit cheaper, at least delivery confirmation is cheaper, only something like $.19 instead of $.75 or whatever it is at the PO.

Get your boxes at uline.com in bulk if you think you are going to be shipping a lot. It's a lot cheaper, even when you figure in shipping. But if you are just starting, you can probably find boxes at Walmart or an office store. Dont' forget to figure in your packaging costs into either your item price or shipping price. I put mine in my shipping price because I have some people who pick it up and then I don't need the box and tape and stuff.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for posting that question. I recently sold some clothing on ebay and was shocked when I went to the post office and I actually paid more for postage than I made on the clothing. Ebay would not even have allowed me to charge enough to cover the postage.

Wondered what everyone did to reduce shipping cost.

Yep, totally agree. Get a scale and use PP shipping. Saves time and money. Just print out your labels and put them in your mailbox. I just recently bought a label maker too so I can print small labels to put on those small boxes. The UPC prints out so big when you use a regular printer. Buy boxes at uline.com. You have to pay quite a bit in shipping so buy as many boxes as you can. The shipping will not increase much. I get the 4x4x4 boxes and I can put 1-3 bows in there. To ship one bow it costs $1.75 with PP shipping. I charge $2.50 to cover my supplies (boxes, labels, stickers, cards, etc). HTH.

Get a scale that will weigh more than you think you need also. In the beginning I had a little scale & then I ended up branching out & selling ribbon so I had to go buy a new scale. I think I got mine on ebay for about $30 & it goes up to I think about 200 lbs.
I would also suggest once you get into this & are shipping more to get a thermal label printer. I was spending a fortune on paper, ink & tape to attach my labels to the packages. With the thermal printers you don't have ink to deal with & only have to get labels (which you can get for free with ups)
