Default Best way to cut tulle for tutus

I'm in the process of making my first tutu.

What is the best way to cut the tulle? Do you use sissors or a rotary cutter?

Thanks

Here is how I do it:

I bought some foam board (at home depot i believe) and cut it to different lengths. I wrap it end over end and cut it at the top and bottom. You can do this with cardboard also. It is super quick to do it this way and it's fairly even and all the same length.

I use the 6" rolls and cut it with a rotary cutter.

I have a self-healing mat and I use a rotary cutter on it. If I'm cutting 14 inch pieces, I usually measure out to 28 and make two cuts, one at 14 and one at 28. Less time spent unrolling that way!

This is what I do too....I use a big metal cookie sheet to get my width. I made 145+ last year and didn't figure thsi out until the end but it saved tons of time.

What an amazing forum - you guys rock!

After a 12 hour overnight shift, I came and tried the cardboard/cookie sheet method. What a time saver! It worked perfectly!

I did 2 rolls of tulle and finished a tutu (MY FIRST ONE!!) that I started yesterday.

Came out great for my first one. I can't wait to make another one!

Thanks again *yawn*

I use whatever is handy and the right length for the size I am making. Cutting boards. books, vhs cases.. lol I only use rolls because cutting yardage is a PITA.

I would never recommend using scissors to cut or trim tulle. For best results I would use a rotary cutter and a self healing cutting mat. The cutting mat will increase the life of your rotary cutter blades and is absolutely wonderful for measuring. I also suggest using a non-slip ruler as a guide for cutting to ensure perfectly straight strips of tulle. Good luck!

I use a piece of wood (its what I had laying around) and wrap the tulle around it (like mentioned above) if I am making several tutus I wrap up to 4 colors at a time to cut down on time and then DH separates them into piles. Works like a charm! Fast too!
