Default Help in making a singed flower

I am in desperate need of someone helping me through making a singed flower. I've read some of the tutorials, and I'm just not comfortable yet, and I only have a small amount of material. This is for a wedding for next weekend, (I don't have time to send it to anyone and get it back in time) I have small pieces of Jade Satin fabric (I believe it's satin) from the sash on the dress.
Do I need a template,
Do I cut the pieces in an exact circle,
Do I use a woodburner, candle or lighter.
I'm familiar with using the woodburner, but have never used the other.
These will be on small clippies for an 18 month old who has very little hair.
Please help,
Thanks,
Jeannie

You don't need a template... just cute circles in different sizes. You will want to use a candle for the singing I think that's the easiest way. You will want to practice first with other fabric so as not to waste any of the fabric you are using for the wedding.

Here is one I did

Yes to what Emilee said. I made one using 4 to 5 1 inch circles for a little one, not overwhelming, just perfect in my opinion. Would post a picture but not available on the computer I'm using. I attached mine to a 30 mm snap clip and mom could use it along or attached to foe.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Cindy

Thanks so much to both of you for the help, then you think the candle is the best thing. Do you just buy a simple stick candle, and barely touch the flame to the fabric, or do you not touch it to the fabric. Do I need to practice on satin, or would some other fabric be easier to try first. I've wanted to make these, but I've been a pretty big coward about it,
Also should I try to find some other fabric like chiffon or something in this same color to add detail to the flower.

Thanks,
Jeannie

I used satin ribbon from TRR I cut it in a circle and put it to the lighter. It didn't do anything but seal the ends. I don't know what I did wrong.

do you have some organza to practice on?

I found using a votive candle works best for me. One that is inside a holder helps prevent drafts from blowing your flame all around. So don't use a stick candle by a fan, lol! I just hold the fabric above the flame, not in it...that works best for me. The heat coming up from the flame is enough to curl and singe, but doesn't burn...unless you get too close.

Using a votive makes sense, the taper candle you would have to keep lighting all the time.
Yes, the fan, glad you mentioned that, I have a ceiling fan in my craft room that normally stays on all the time, I'll need to turn that off for sure.
I'm gonna practice tonight, we'll see how I do, I may stop by JoAnn's on the way home and pick up a few remnant or clearance pieces of satin or organza whichever they have the cheapest.
Also is there one of the fabrics, satin, organza, chiffon, that seems to be the easiest to work with?
Thanks for all your guys help and input,
I really appreciate it,
Jeannie

I have better luck using a lighter and holding the fabric with tweezers but the others have given you great ideas too!

I'm gonna start practicing when I get home from work today, I'll let you guys know how I do. I need to stop by WalMart and get me a lighter in case that works better for me than a candle. We'll see how this all turns out,
Thanks again to everyone,
Jeannie

OMG I love that outift! are those singed flowers on the shoes? SO CUTE!

Singing isn't hard. When I first started making them I used items that were round from my kitchen to make circles on paper and would pin them on the fabric to cut out the circles. Practice makes perfect. I think making singed flowers is one of the easiest techniques out there. Good Luck and post the flower when you are done!
