Default Wholesale discount %

Hi Ladies,

I was just approached by a boutique that I sell my stuff consignment to sell to them wholesale. What is a going percentage off retail price for wholesale? the owner suggested 40% and I thought that was too high a percentage.

Any input appreciated.

I haven't done it yet, but I thought it was 30%. Good luck. I turned one down because she wanted too much of a discount.

I actually had a boutique tell me it was 50% usually. I could see for people that retail their stuff at a higher cost...but I was thinking are you kidding me...I do all the work and zero profit. I tried to explain to her that my retail prices were already low...but she wasn't interested.

I am very curious to see what everyone replies to thi.

Luckily I have a full time job -- and I have said as much to the owner. However I do enjoy making bows and I'm very good at it however I do not like to be exploited - I do not want to do all the work and some else profits. I also have another boutique that wants me to do wholesale but I need to get her a price list.

My daughter gets compliments all the time even at some of the top children's boutiques in our area.

I also had a dance school owner that has a boutique tell me it was 50 %. Told her NO Thank you...she called about 2 weeks later asking for 30% discount but I didn't take it. I hate their get over mentality.

It look forward to what others say. A typical wholesale discount is 50% or so when someone pays money for the products to resale....I wouldn't give someone my product for free and give them 50%. Unless they are promoting your company and brand alot that's not going to help your business grow like getting your products into the hands of people who will reorder from you because they like your products. I would say consignment would be a 70/30 or less split IMO. There have been other posts about consignment and such. I would also negotiate what they will do with stolen or damaged goods...who will be out they money you or will them have to buy them. Best of luck with your business! Seems like there is a hg on here that offers consignment in her own store I can't think of her name she might have some advice!

If my supplies cost me .50 I sell to boutiques for $1.50 then they usually mark them to $3.00. My bows that cost me $1.00 I sell for $3.00 and they mark to $6.00.
If I was selling at a show my bows would be $3.00 and $6.00. So technically it is a 50% with mine, but I've already got my mark up before their so called 50%. Don't know if that made any sense or not.

I'm thinking of offering my products wholesale. I was also wondering how much to discount. I'd say I'm leaning towards 30%. People need to understand that we make our stuff and it is time-consuming.

I think that retail companies (big ones, not little guys like us ) usually wholesale things at 50% off retail.

I was selling somethings wholesale at 50% - but I've gotten so busy with regular retail that its not worth it for me. So I am not taking wholesale orders right now - but if/when things slow down on the retail side, I will only be giving a 30% discount for wholesale.

I think being that our things are individually made, not mass produced, the wholesale percantage should be no more than 30%.

My two cents anyway.

I'm getting ready to have my items in a salon. We haven't discussed percentage yet but I will not go over 30% I'm thinking more along the lines of 20% since this isn't a retail business it's a hair salon and I'm not where their money is. KWIM?

I do at least 50% off for my retail accounts. You have to mark your prices higher to do this but from dealing with companies they expect at least to mark it up by 50%. When I sold toys retail I expected to make at least 50% as well. If you find you can't do this you may need to re-look at your pricing structure and charge more for what you do. I just recently done this and it has helped a lot.
