Default AGGG, rolling elastic in tutu band?!?!

It seems like no matter what I use for the waistband of a tutu it always rolls in half on me. Even no-roll elastic!! Am I just pulling too tight?!? What is the secret?!?! It makes me so frustrated!! I look at these cute pics of tutus with perfect elastic waistband and I am jealous.

Ok, don't laugh, but here are the first pics. As soon as I took them, I undid everything to start over. I ended up doing knots because I just coulnd't get it. I like the knots and I think it is just as easy or easier - and I can do it!!! I will do a little photo shoot with dd to show off the new version tomorrow!! It took me forever though!!

Are you knotting the tutu, or sewing? I have made a tutu by knotting the tulle aroung the elastic. If you pull too tight it will roll. Just make sure the elastic is always flat after making your knots. HTH

I wish I could help with that. That happened to me also. I haven't made another since cuz I couldn't figure out what I did wrong so I'd like info on this also. My nieces would love me extra for it. Lol

I don't sew. I loop the tulle through and pull it. I like them tight...looks better and more secure. How do I make the tight knots without pulling the elastic? How do I keep it flat? Can I just hold the edge of the elastic to keep the knot there?!?...or use a clip or pin to keep it there? Does that makes sense?? Do i need to try to use the square knot instead of the loop through?

I use a loop knot, I make my tutus very full, I use just one piece of tulle at a time, that way you can pull the knot tight without all the bulk. I cram as much tulle on the elastic as I can to give the full look.

I use my thumb in between the knot and the elastic to pull the knot into the correct place and tighten it.

That may be the problem. I use two or three pieces for a layer. Maybe try one and just cram a ton on!?!?!?...I can do that. I think I get what you mean with your thumb. I started one at home so maybe I will take it apart and try one at at time using my thumb.

Good luck! I always get a nice clean waist band using one piece at a time, I use about 75 yards of tulle in my tutus.
Post a pic when you are done!

I haven't made too many, but have always used three pieces. I know I didn't use that many yards. I had three colors and didn't use the full 25y spools - it was probably close though. The one that I am talking about is one that I was trying to make for my dd for the 4th. It didn't get done. lol!! I was getting frustrated with the elastic so I just left it on the table when I left for the weekend. When I get home, I will take it apart and start again. I will take pics for sure!! Hope I can get it to look right!!

Added pics of my three layer loop. I ended up doing knots and really like it. I will add those pics tomorrow when I get a chance to take a few of my dd in the tutu.

I have an object that I use as a spacer when I tie my knots. This way the elastic doesn't roll and each knot has the same amount of space in the hole. I also use just 1 piece. The knot I use depends on how long the tutu is. I think the box knot looks great on a short and sassy one and the slip knot makes the longer tutus flow better. HTH
