Default I feel dumb for asking....

Hi everyone. I am sooo new at this, I made my first bow today, and it definitely does not look like any of yours!! Anyways, Is there something you have to do to make the ribbon a bit stiffer? I did a second one and starched and ironed the ribbon thinking that they wouldn't look so droopy but it didnt help a whole lot. Is there something I'm not doing right? Thanks in advance for any help!!

Jen

I like stiffen stuff. It's a spray you can get at michaels, hl, acmoore, etc..

Show us some pictures. Maybe we can help you out.

I have found that Schiff ribbon is more stiff. It is my favorite to work with and holds it shape very well. I don't use anything on my bows (except korkers), but I have heard of starching after the bow is made and microwaving for 20 seconds or so...

I will have to try that, thank you. I'm sure the quality of ribbon is a big factor. I just went and got some stuff from Walmart since I am an hour from the nearest craft store. I'll get some pics, they are cute from far away but i wouldnt want anyone getting real close....

Stiffen Stuff and that's it. No diluting (at least I don't ). Spray, shape it and let it sit to dry. That's it

I use stiffen stuff too and a lot of people also use hairspray, I've never tried it though. There are a few post in this forum about making bows stiff.

I am a former starcher... now it's only Aussie Instant Freeze hair spray for me!

and the bows get to use it sometimes too...

I was having the same problem right when I started & I used stiffen stuff & someone suggested creasing the bow in the center (like folding the bow to make the bow stand up more- making the bottom & top loops touch each other ) (sorry hard to explain) and that seemed to help too.

I use good ol' aqua net hair spray and it works great. There is no way those will lose their shape unless they get dropped in a pool of water lol.
I make the bow first, then spray. Some people want to dry them faster so they put them in the oven, microwave, or use the blow dryer.

They do have some good instructions here to make the bowtique bow you should try that if you haven't already.

I would post a picture of your bow these ladies around here are bow experts and i'm sure somone can point out where you went wrong, or even if you did go wrong. I bet it looks good just not to you lol. I never think any of my bows look good.

The type of ribbon you use has alot to do with whether you need to stiffen a bow or not. Good quality grosgrain really doesn't need any additional stiffening. It's also much easier to work with, esp when first learning.

I think you will find that satin and organza are much harder to handle when first learning.

Warning about using the microwave.....you need to place JUST the ribbon in, NO CLIP or other metal or sparks will fly!
