For new borns I make them about 12-13 inches
0-6 months about 14-15"
6-12 about 16-18"
1-2years 18-20"
2-3 years 20-22"
3-4 years 22-24"

Hope that helps, also, when possible I ask for waist size when I take an order.

do you subtract 2 inches for stretch? im finding the elastic really stretches and makes the waist larger then what i started out with?

Well, it depends on a couple of factors...

you can cut usually between 2-4 inches off...BUT...

If you use a better quality thicker no roll elastic you would cut off less.

Also, if you are tying your knots too tight it would cause you to need to cut off more..But remember, if you are needing to cut off this much (4 inches) then the elastic may not be as nice and stretchy on the completed tutu.

Try practicing making the knots tight with your thumb under there to hold it so it doesn't pull so tight on the elastic..

No, I don't subtract any amount from mine, the numbers I posted are the lenghts I can my elastic to. But I also sew mine, not tie so my elastic doesn't strech out like it does when you tie them.

I use 1" non-roll elastic. I measure the waist and then subtract 5 inches, works great for me.
