I sew mine in the middle and really just practiced a lot. I also play around with the lengths too, I think 17" of ribbon is my favorite.

Sewing the center versus tying it made a huge difference for me. I use a homemade template with cardboard and pull the bow directly off of the template and sew three stitches up the center leaving the needle in, no clip or gator bite necessary. Then pull the thread all the way through and wrap around the center three or four times and tie off. You may have to fix the crease or adjust the ribbon somewhat.
